Deurbanising the city. A path of sun and shadow. The path of the mulberry trees is located in the Vega Baja de Toledo. A void of dispute between speculative hyper-development and historicist immobilism, in the rich productive plain that meanders around the Tagus, where nature embraces the factories of the city walls above.

After the extension of 1,800 dwellings planned at the beginning of 2000 was halted due to the discovery of important archaeological remains, the site was placed under administrative protection and fenced off. Its centuries-old open and walkable character degenerated into a stigmatised void of urban pessimism, abandonment and a border between neighbourhoods.

The project is a dirt road, a precise alignment of mulberry trees linking the artificial territory of the city with the river. The path removes the inoperative fences, crosses the site, protects the remains, recovers the memory of peri-urban paths associated with silk production and returns the emptiness - the natural landscape - to citizens. The asymmetrical slope raises the path and the viewing plane over the archaeological remains. It is built with earth from the archaeological excavation in different layers to support, protect, drain, lift and walk.

The street - the road - is now full of walkers in the winter sun and summer shade, revealing that the natural order has enormous potential in the quality of life, in the project for a more austere city, respectful of nature, supportive, social and sensible. A new road in an old city.
