Casa 10 x 10

An urban dwelling with an extensive family programme requires a large number of technical and minor places that are just as important to domestic life as the ones we usually call the main ones. Bathrooms, toilets, kitchens, cupboards, laundry rooms, drying rooms, utility shafts, storerooms, wardrobes, window boxes, staircases, bicycle storage and terraces constitute a repertoire of active spaces that are just as crucial as those dedicated to rest and leisure.

The geometry of the site on which the house stands, a ten-metre square with three party walls and a south-facing façade, and the heavy traffic on the street where it stands, suggest shifting this collection of small active spaces to the perimeter of the site, freeing up the centre of the square for living areas.

A double grey brick wall box thickens the boundaries of the site and houses the four concrete pillars on which the slabs of each floor are supported, so that the central living space is protected by a belt of intermediate storage and installation rooms. This exterior and interior ceramic materiality, and the beams of the concrete slabs, give the space a constructive expression that tones down the abstraction of the ground plan.

The concentric geometry of this spatial layout is relied upon as an argument for establishing fluid and dense relationships between the different spaces in the house, between those that we inhabit slowly and those that allow the flow of everyday life to take place.
