The Old Bridge, the river channeling walls around the bridge and the old mills of Murcia form a unitary urban nucleus that characterises the heart of the city and the most significant point of the city's intersection with the Segura River. It is clear that the rehabilitation of the mills has a great impact on the whole image of the city. By virtue of this physical unity, any work on the mills affects the entire area of the city on both sides of the river.

The rehabilitation project closes and completes the image of such urban importance of the left bank, proposing a well-defined visual balance on the side of the Carmen neighbourhood. The mills were designed together with the retaining walls and the old stone bridge according to the layout designed by Jaime Bort, and the construction of the complex took place between 1718 and 1741.

The initial layout of this area of the Carmen neighbourhood is the result of the same impulse in urban reforms and actions that Floridablanca promoted in the 18th century. Thus, the square next to the mills, Camachos, also initially designed by Bort, was created with the aim of articulating the entrance from the south to the Old Bridge, linking the roads to Cartagena, Beniaján and the alameda that would open up from the square to the church of El Carmen.

This link between the origin of the mills and other nearby urban factors, their intimate connection with the definition of the urban cornice on the riverbed, the condition of the crossroads next to the Old Bridge, the public nature of the mills as a whole, as well as the unitary root of the urban reforms in the area, have weighed heavily in the orientation of our proposal.
