'El Carme' Cultural Centre

The Cultural Centre replaces the old Carme clinic on the corner of Sant Francesc d'Assís and Francesc Layret streets. After crossing Layret, Rue d'Assís changes its width from 5 to 10 metres and its name becomes El Temple. In order to achieve a better geometric and visual agreement between these two widths, the ground floor of the new building narrows and widens Assís until a 45º corner with Layret is built, where the main door is located.

The clinic had four floors; now the Cultural Centre has five and its interior heights are higher due to the new activities. The different geometry of the floors results in the superimposition of different volumes that characterise the appearance of the building. The terraces on each floor are the result of the displacements between volumes. The volumes of the top three storeys are freed from the party walls and jut out towards the corner with overhangs that overhang Layret; this avoids the visual presence in the streets of new party walls jutting out from the neighbouring buildings. On the third floor, the volume recurs on the neighbouring building on Assís Street to create a terrace facing the sea, which serves a small indoor bar.

The north-east façade, which connects with the inner courtyard of the block, is set back from its boundary, allowing the construction of courtyards that illuminate the basement floor, which is used for exhibitions. The core of vertical communications and services, set back from the streets, rest on the party wall of the neighbouring Layret.

With the exception of the communications volume, which is opaque and illuminated by a patio, the rest of the building is a curtain wall veiled by 24 cm wide aluminium louvres, except on the north-east side. The large louvre blades are fixed, but change their inclination to look between them at eye level. At night, the building can appear as a large and rare urban lamp with riotous streaks of alien Mediterranean or oriental light.
