On the edge of a large irrigation channel, today in the centre of the village, the ruins of the old mill in Utebo, Zaragoza, have been transformed into a cultural centre and a small museum of hydraulic exploitation.

The programme of the centre is compacted in the free part of the plot, aligned with the irrigation channel, generating a vertical volume that is juxtaposed to the horizontal body that reconstructs and encompasses the space of the mill, in a staggered sequence towards the watercourse. It is set in a hostile environment of recently constructed, taller and more voluminous residential buildings. It confronts its inferiority of conditions with two decisions: carving an abstract volume without elements of reference of visible dimensions, and projecting itself through a long access route.

The area between El Molino and Plaza Aragón is treated as part of the cultural centre, a large outdoor hall that slopes down from the level of the square to the sheet of water that emerges from the drainage tunnels. The new building refers to the traditional local architecture and to the mill itself, with a strong mural character. The entire building and the exterior spaces are practically made of a single material, a stone volume on the edge of the ditch, rough in appearance but with a precise outline. Its structure, enclosure, paving and some ceilings are made of ochre-coloured concrete, the constructive evolution of the traditional rammed earth and stone and mortar walls. Its texture is generated from the material that abounds in the entire channel of the irrigation channel, the reeds, which are used to form the outer face.

The surfaces will have a strong texture, related to their environment, which will provide vibration and chromatic variations throughout the day and the seasons, and a rich matt character capable of accepting imperfection and the passage of time.
