Expansion of the Palau de la Música de Valencia

The personality of the existing architecture has determined an intervention that is planned to be entirely buried and laid out on the southeast side of the building, arranging the different areas that make up the programme of the extension around landscaped courtyards and with its upper roof also landscaped in order not to visually alter the configuration of the site.

The building is on two levels below ground level on Paseo de la Alameda. Access to the extension is via a sloping courtyard with three palm trees; once inside, all the circulation spaces converge in a large public space which is conceived as a meeting place for the different parts of the project. The chosen orientation allows the sun's rays to penetrate directly into the interior during the morning, the time of day when most activity is concentrated, creating a bright and friendly space.

The extension project is structured around three areas: The management and administration area is organised on two levels around a large tree-lined courtyard with eight poplars. This courtyard, visually connected to the atrium, maintains functional independence from the musicians' area. The upper level houses the management offices and the lower level is designed as an open-plan space that is structured by the distribution of the furniture. An internal staircase connects the two floors, facilitating the relationship between the management and administration areas.
