Extension of the cemetery in Camarma de Esteruelas

Camarma de Esteruelas is a small village in the Meseta Sur, not far from Alcalá de Henares. It is mainly agricultural, but it also has some industry and, like so many small and large towns, in the interests of progress and out of a modesty that tries to erase the part of its memory associated with the simplest images of its past, it is dedicated to the replacement of the mud and lime architecture with others that are alien to it.

The old, but new, cemetery at the entrance to the village is a significant case in point. Surrounded by a brick wall, in an area of expected urban expansion, it could become part of a confusing ceramic magma, where terraced housing, schools and sports centres compete for prominence.

The necessary extension of the building is proposed as an opportunity to redirect the image of the complex to less ambiguous terrain. This extension is conceived as an extension of the walls to the south, using a popular language in the construction and bringing, with the simple use of plaster, the old part into this same language. An atrium at the new entrance serves as a meeting and waiting place and, despite its simplicity, does not shy away from a certain solemnity in its composition.

Some symbolic accents, the wheat that is life and the measure of time that is vanity, remind us of the act that is represented there. Inside, with a simple arrangement of the slabs and future hedges, the aim is to avoid the mass character of so many cemeteries, creating small enclosures that favour intimacy.
