The Hospital del Mar extension and remodelling project had a twofold objective: to define the new functional and physical organisation of the Olympic hospital, and to define its structure and image within the urban actions and projects on the immediate seafront.

From the urban point of view, we saw the new hospital buildings from the need to connect the Barceloneta neighbourhood with the new Olympic Village, and from the desire to integrate these hospital and research facilities with the network of green spaces on the seafront, offering environmental and sponge-like architectural spaces. Natural light, inside-outside relations, the search for a domestic atmosphere of great comfort were the parameters that helped to define it.

The aim is to achieve a comfortable domestic environment: from the functional organisation of the building, avoiding overcrowding in the entrances, consulting rooms and external hospital services; from the personalisation of each subset of the hospital, and from the deepening of the "functional" contents of each space to enable its appropriation by health workers and users.
