The proposed site for the stadium was a hilly piece of land corresponding to an old quarry, east of the urban centre of Jaén, in the middle of the magnificent landscape of olive groves that surrounds the city. In order to produce the least possible alterations to the topography, the project, which was the winner of the public competition held in 1998 with the participation of prestigious architects and construction companies, was planned as a semi-buried tray with part of the stands carved into the hillside and the playing field depressed.

The proposal built today is articulated through elements related to the landscape scale, seeking a balance between the intrinsically urban condition of a facility of this type and its insertion into the natural landscape to the point of annulling its possible environmental impact.

With the same criterion of sustainability, resources have been used such as the inclusion of landscaped surfaces inside the stadium and on its outer perimeter which, together with the use of brick, give it the mineral appearance of a singular building and at the same time of a fragment of the territory in its natural state.
