The commission arose from an Ideas Competition organised by the Vitoria City Council. The programme includes the construction of covered mechanical ramps - 4 sections in Cantón de la Soledad and 3 sections in Cantón de San Francisco Javier.
The ramps will be covered in their entirety The decision to cover the ramps allows them to be used with the best guarantees, given the extreme winter conditions in Vitoria. In addition to preventing the presence of snow or ice on the surface of the ramp, water ingress is considerably reduced.
The architectural design is closely related to the improvement of the intended visual impact. We understand that ramps without a cover would have too obvious a "machinist" impact. The aim of the covering is to camouflage this fact by giving prominence to the architectural element, which will be the focus of the user's vision and interest. Covering will be both complex and simple. Complex in its apparent three-dimensional perception, and simple because it is conceived from equal pieces, only displaced between them.
The basic stainless steel and glass gantry behaves in a similar way to the frames of a film, by means of small rotating displacements around a virtual axis in sequences of 1 m in distance. The sensation of rotational movement perceived by the user takes advantage of the sliding of the ramp itself to create a linked sequence that maintains interest during the ascent, creating different visuals in the different sections and places along the route.
The permanent view of the outside through the glass windows contributes to this sensation produced by the continuous turning of the porticoes.
