Museum of the Roman Theatre of Cartagena

The unexpected discovery of the remains of a Roman theatre when demolishing some houses in the historic centre of Cartagena is at the origin of a project such as this one, which aims to incorporate the recovered Roman theatre into the city. The museum sensu stricto resolves the access to the Roman theatre. The entrance is in the Town Hall square, making use of a building dating from the end of the 19th century, the Riquelme Palace, which houses the library and the museum's administration services.

It then passes under a street, where Roman remains can be seen, and leads to a space where the valuable artefacts found in the excavations are exhibited and where an escalator system leads to higher levels.

And now, under the Old Cathedral, we find a dramatic display of archaeological remains, a sample of what the city of Cartagena was, finally reaching the theatre, which must be understood as the last museum episode. The intervention, on the other hand, has resulted in the theatre being incorporated into the park, and has helped to give a better perception of what the city was like in the past and to give the dense historic centre a breath of fresh air without losing its character.
