Rehabilitation of the Hacienda Santa Ana in Tomares

Olive farms, which followed the Muslim farmhouses and the villae, Roman farms, are the most architecturally interesting rural constructions in the Lower Guadalquivir. They were used to grow and operate olive groves and reached their greatest hegemony in the 18th century. The Santa Ana Hacienda in Tomares is presumed to date from this period.

The refurbishment of the Hacienda de Santa Ana deals with a group of ruined buildings, some already partially restored for use by administrative services by the Town Hall. Our proposal proposes demolishing all these interventions since we consider them inadequate, both in relation to the spatial structure of the hacienda and the quality of the materials, and to introduce new architecture that seeks its foundations in the experience of the existing.

Just as the new architecture proposed would maintain a spirit of continuity with the past, it seemed equally important to us not to overestimate the old-quality relationship, i.e. the indiscriminate permanence of the old, and to act decisively by demolishing everything devoid of architectural, constructive or historical value. To preserve only quality architecture, with the desire to introduce a new architecture that would coexist naturally with the existing building.

It would therefore be the old building, or rather its remains, that would suggest the way forward. From listening to the old building. An attitude that distances itself from the philological relationship with history, from historicist mimicry, and from the contrasting position of modern tradition, or, in other words, from the celebration of the encounter or self-complacency in the juxtaposition of both architectures.

Perhaps in our case we could refer to the establishment of an analogy with the old structures, seeking to achieve a harmonious connection with what already exists. An analogue tuning. At the same time, the renovated building will have to offer an image tinged with contemporaneity, as it is due to a contemporary time and circumstances. Its renovated image will reveal its belonging to the present time of the action.
