Renovation of the Ronda del Guinardó ring road

José Antonio Martínez Lapeña & Elías Torres Architects (2)

Action has been taken on a 5 hectare area. The viaduct that hovered over the public space has been demolished and vehicle traffic has been reorganised. Walking and play areas for citizens now take centre stage. Lifts, escalators and ramps make for ease of movement despite having to overcome large topographical differences in height.

In the steepest section of the ring road, traffic flowing in two directions was separated by 5 m in height. Demolishing the cantilever that supported the upper lanes and moving the vehicles to the lower level has made space for a large walkway, with traffic restricted to services and access to the buildings' garages.

The wall that supported the cantilever, the support for this new promenade and along which the walkway now runs in two directions, and has been clad with sound-absorbing bricks glazed in two shades of green. A longitudinal planter runs along the top of the wall, with hanging plants that help to make its inevitable presence more pleasant. All the walls of the renovated area are clad with the same glazed bricks and topped with granite blocks. A continuous salmon-coloured modified asphalt pavement covers all pedestrian areas.

The lampposts are conventional, in the form of a curved branch. A total of 470 trees of different species have been planted, with the tipuana being the main species, to give a more unified image to the complex. The final result has been effortlessly assimilated by citizens, as if the previous discordant elements in this space had never existed.
