Restoration of the King's Hospital

The building, although apparently in a deplorable state, was still a solid structure, a prototype of the military architecture brought to Spain by Flemish military engineers. It was therefore necessary to introduce a programme that differed from the original, and to rescue the building from neglect. The entire back part, in a sorry state, was rebuilt to establish new, more dignified connections between its two floors; old underground galleries were also recovered and all the window openings were rebuilt with spaces designed to link those recovered. The refurbishment uses modern architecture with archaic and essential roots that seek proximity to military architecture.

The ultimate aim was to reinforce the primitive character of the building without repeating the forms of the past. A building that served as Melilla's hospital for more than two centuries is now the headquarters of the General Archive and Publications Service of the Autonomous City.
