The Port of Huelva has offered the city the new Paseo de la Ría which will be the Odiel riverfront of the future urban expansion on the left bank of the estuary next to and along Montenegro Avenue.
The promenade is 1 km long and 80 m wide and occupies what was until now a rocky and muddy area. Its width is equal to that of the old quays of the port, which allows the mud to be almost invisible at low tide, due to the perforated concrete skirt, the vertical cliff over the water.
This public space reclaimed from the water is divided into two zones, one occupied by different islands of amoeboid shapes, with undulating green dunes, planted with stone pines - which replicate the landscape of the protected marshland park on the right bank of the river - between which lampposts, benches and kiosks for bars and services are interspersed. There are four different undulating elevations that form three-tier amphitheatres, partly covered with thin concrete pergolas supported by steel columns, which are another type of floating amoebae, located in the green dune area facing the Odiel.
The other area, which is free of flowerbeds and buildings, is 25 m wide and allows free walking along the water. This area borders the water's edge with a railing that is a replica of the old harbour. All the spaces not occupied by the green flowerbeds are paved with strips of five different colours reminiscent of the soil of the Rio Tinto Mines, overlapping each other like festoons. The promenade narrows and undulates as it meets the old ore loading bay of the mines, a protected industrial archaeological site, to accentuate its scenic presence.
