Smart Tree. Rehusing UMA´S Waste

marinauno (1)

Smart Tree was born from a research project at the University of Malaga with the aim of recycling elements from the demolition of campus buildings to improve university teaching environments. Smart Tree is conceived as a self-sufficient biotechnological tree whose mission is to rehabilitate the university's outdoor spaces, promoting their use through the creation of green environments and connective services. Located to the north-west of the Faculty of Science, this intervention transforms a disused site to provide users of the surrounding buildings with an open-air, relaxed and friendly "co-working" space, creating a microclimate of environmental and sensory comfort, and technology to access renewable energies and information.

Smart Tree's structure and furnishings have been designed using materials from the partial demolition of buildings on campus that have reached the end of their first useful life. The pavilion is a reused structure that served as a pergola in the courtyard of the Faculty of Fine Arts, whose necessary refurbishment implied its elimination. Three triangulated spatial structures were obtained to compose the pavilion and the pillars were reused as foundation piles. The power of these structures and the absence of other structural elements to be recycled gave rise to the cantilever that is the "folie", which, painted yellow, floats above the garden while barely touching it. Tubular iron benches and beech wood boards from the demolition of the laboratories of the Faculty of Science were used to furnish the pavilion and to delimit the cultivation areas.

The prototype has been built on a garden which, with the intention of improving the environmental and sensorial conditions, integrates native flora. A weather station and various strategically located sensors allow the collection of real-time data on environmental and subsoil quality conditions, from which conclusions are drawn to improve this space and its future application in other outdoor rehabilitation projects.

The autonomous energy collection system installed in the Smart Tree includes the control systems, the lighting of the pavilion itself and the creation of a charging point for electric bicycles.
