St. Peter Martyr Theologate Ensemble

Along these lines the Dominicos de Fuencarral would represent a formal advance in which, without aiming to break with tradition, it would propose a re-reading, entering into the essence of the religious space to achieve a new or revitalised version that would strengthen the link between man and God in a dynamic, non-conformist, austere way but with great chromatic richness, in which architecture recovers its role as an integrator of all the arts.

The church is the most singular element of the complex, becoming immediately visible with its stylised bell tower, a landmark crowned by a cross wrapped in an abstract tangle of iron. It has a hyperbolic floor plan, with the altar in the centre, illuminated from above by an original lattice of metal tubes which emphatically separates the choir for the Dominican community from the nave of the faithful.

The result is a sober, silent space, yet convergent and dramatic at the same time, accentuated by the treatment of light and colour and dominated by the large crucifix by the sculptor Pablo Serrano suspended in the air above the altar on wires. The complex has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest.
