The new library is located on the site of the former Hernán Cortés barracks, in the part closest to Doctor Cerrada Street. In accordance with the study of detail drawn up at the time by the Zaragoza Urban Planning Department, two buildings attached to the party walls and a central volume set back from the street were planned for this area of the site.

Given the extension of the programme to be housed in the new building, it was decided, in agreement with the City Council, to merge the central volume and one of the party walls, This starting point is fundamental for understanding the global structuring of the building, which has to resolve problems induced by the dimensioning of the buildable depths, such as those of natural lighting, which are fundamental in a library.

The unity of the complex, resolving the partial aspects of each component and the ambiguous character produced by the encounter of the scale used with that of the surroundings, which is markedly residential in character, is also a determining factor in the solution adopted.

The quality of the construction and its materials place the building respectfully in the environment and in time. As in any living, open-ended work, the transition from the project to the built reality has been a long and balanced process of approaching the seamless union between the possible and the desirable.

The street in front of the site, like the rest of the streets in the expansion area, is mainly used for residential purposes, so the library acts as a public building within an urban sequence destined for housing.

The limitations imposed by urban planning requirements demand the completion of the party walls that are exposed with a building of equal height, and the construction of another building of lesser height, set back from the street, leaving pedestrian access to the gardens inside the site.
