The neighbourhood where this house is located has its own name (Barriada Cuatro Santos de Cartagena) and its own physiognomy, with recognisable elements that make it unique in the city. This characteristic, like the heights, the proportion of the streets, the number of floors or exterior staircases... are means of creating an entity in an enclave where individual houses are still of an appropriate scale.

By digging out a floor below ground level and gaining the roof floor as a living space, we have improved the initial volumetric conditions and produced a body with a horizontal external presence and a vertical internal reality. The central void, enclosed by a light wall cut into planes of different conditions, extends towards the perimeter walls. The staircases are divided to connect the overall programme, to go up the different flights in different ways and to perceive different perceptive situations. On the roof, a swimming pool crowns the upward journey with intensity. The construction must integrate both housing and a workshop. The studio has its own requirements: space for painting, for storing and moving large paintings, natural and artificial light and independence.

As a place to visit and welcome gallerists and clients, it includes a "public" programme of tours. The house has two façades: it is massive on the street and assumes speed and environmental protection, and its size, its material, relieves the interior spaces of all responsibility for the limit. The interior façade, open to the light and air of a courtyard, changes according to the conditions of orientation, height and the degree of privacy of the adjoining room.
