On the outside, white walls and volumes floating in the rough sea of lava, without wanting to show the real dimensions of the building. In the interiors, the large volume of exhibition space is nuanced, seeking different situations and sensations. The treatment of light and the relationship with the exterior are of fundamental importance.

Long perspectives are sought, with different exterior frames; the overwhelming lava, the distant view of the white village, the volcanoes of the Park or the stillness of the valleys of the sea of lava with the Atlantic in the background. The interior of the room is illuminated by small glazed courtyards, light beacons, one of which, turning into a light well, connects with the cave that cuts through the entire thickness of the lava flow to the ground before the eruptions of 1736.

To carry out the work, the surface layer of lava, which was a different colour due to oxidation and with lichen on the side exposed to the prevailing winds, was removed, and the building was fitted into the abrupt topography and the lava that had been removed was replaced. The white of the exterior whitewash contrasts with the colour of the lava, which also covers the roofs. Lava pavement, washed concrete and steel plates. Carpentry and protection elements made of riga wood from Honduras treated with oil and judea bitumen.
