The project called for the construction of 22 public housing units for young people in the heart of Madrid's El Rastro, an open-air market that has been held since 1740 in the popular neighbourhood of La Latina. The Plaza del General Vara de Rey is one of the most representative. Corralas, a characteristic and now protected building type, abounded, established around a large central courtyard with access to the dwellings via corridors. Some have interior passages that are occupied on market days by shops and stalls.

However, the block where the plot is located has lost the corralas that existed in the past, the neighbourhood courtyards, places of intense social relations and exchange, which have been replaced by strict courtyards of lights, functional but devitalised. Something similar has happened to the façades: the traditional balconies that "widened" them with spaces halfway between inside and outside have been replaced by simple windows.

Overcoming this spatial and functional impoverishment of the building has been the aim of the project. The choice of the system and the recovery of the interior common area as an organising element was one of the initial decisions, rejecting the current conventional type of blocks with doorways and small courtyards.

The unique location in the square suggested the opportunity to open up the courtyard to the square through a large opening, as is the case in some of the older buildings in the neighbourhood. The central courtyard was conceived as an intermediate area between the strictly private and the public space. A place for socialising and which, with a more domestic character, would provide the dwellings -small, as required by the regulations- with extensions that would favour coexistence. This includes bicycle parking, laundry facilities and communal clotheslines.
