Archaeological Museum of Alava

We like to imagine an archaeological museum as a dense chest which, like any chest, hides inside it the treasure that history has left us piece by piece. We like to think of it as one more story of ours that never ends, because in it, just as important as the small or large piece found under the floor is the gaze of whoever contemplates it. This is why the small chest, dense and hermetic on the outside, must be suggestive and magical on the inside.

The space it contains cannot be limited to being a computer space, nor a game of beautiful but distant architecture; it must be a place capable of evoking places and people from the small fragment of ceramic that, more powerful than rock, has managed to survive to speak to us of the fragility of time.

In the permanent exhibition rooms, the horizontal planes, floors and ceilings are very dark. The "stick" wood floor, almost black, and the continuous ceiling, also black. This is the box that takes us back to time, concentrated in the layers of earth that over the years, one after the other, have been forming the thick wall that is history. But these spaces are pierced by white glass prisms around which the exhibition of the pieces is organised.

The building is configured on the basis of the context and the continuity it establishes with the adjoining Palacio de Bendaña, currently the Álava Fournier Museum of Playing Cards. The main entrance is through the same courtyard that serves as the entrance to the palace and provides an insight into the whole complex. Functionally, the building is organised in such a way that the work areas, as well as the library and workshops, are located on the ground floor facing the street, with independent access from the main entrance.
