The CaixaForum Seville Cultural Centre represents the capacity to fight against difficulty, against limitations. It has been built in a space intended for underground parking, where there was already a strong structural concrete skeleton. The project attempts to resolve two issues that are always important in interventions on existing structures: the occupation strategy and the need for visibility, as it is a buried building.

The first question is answered by locating a series of relatively autonomous enclosures seeking peaceful coexistence and coexistence: two exhibition halls, an auditorium, cultural workshops, to which are added the administration and a cafeteria, which are accommodated to the available spaces, but without being subjected to the existing structure.

To resolve the issue of visibility, it is proposed to build an outdoor canopy to cover the access systems and allow the flow of visitors: a public space, a small covered plaza. The canopy is characterised formally by curvilinear cut-outs, the result of interaction with the existing trees, in a desire to achieve an intense relationship between architecture and nature. It not only covers and protects the entrances, but also becomes a container of natural light, which it captures and directs towards the underground hall through a large skylight. A skylight that catches the light and filters it through a porous aluminium foam envelope, transfiguring the sun's rays into vibrations on the pavement. Light thus becomes matter.

The project proposes the superimposition of two worlds: an interior, excavated world, which is resolved with a Cartesian, orthogonal architecture, an architecture for ever, of permanence, and an exterior world represented by the canopy, which responds to contingencies, limitations, links and constrictions. An architecture that responds to the will of an era and to contemporary sensibility. Both worlds are connected by a channel of natural light.
