This project consists of the refurbishment and extension of the existing barracks in the former Instituto mental de la Santa Creu  (1886-1910) in Nou Barris (Barcelona). Given its size, the building houses almost all of the neighbourhood's municipal services: the district offices, the library, the technical services and the Guardia Urbana barracks, and were in a poor state of repair.

The existing building, which is smaller than the original due to successive demolitions over the years, is a mineral construction with mixed masonry walls of ceramic brick and stone. The space consists of a sequence of courtyards with a cloister structure surrounded by longitudinal and transversal naves.

For heritage reasons, the project conserves the old hexagonal autopsy room in the centre of the courtyard. Emptying the central courtyard entails supporting the existing buildings by means of reinforced concrete screen walls around the entire perimeter.

Basement floor - DATAAE

In terms of use, the project’s more public programme is on the ground floor and private areas such as the barracks, offices, changing rooms and meeting rooms are moved to the underground building in the centre of the courtyard.

The old hexagonal building is reused as a skylight for the underground building to ensure that natural light penetrates the heart of the new construction.
