Refurbishment of a warehouse belonging to the former Daoíz y Velarde Barracks in Madrid, for the construction of a Cultural Centre. Based on the idea of respecting the general geometry of the existing building, as well as the metallic structure and the brickwork façade, the interior of the building is emptied and becomes an envelope for the Children's Theatre and the Cultural Centre, which are configured as two independent elements with separate accesses and circulations but with a strong visual and spatial connection and with the possibility of adapting to different types of events.

An intermediate separating space is created between the old building and the new uses, which enhances the character of the existing building and creates a filter and protection zone from the outside. These interstitial spaces allow for a visual connection to be established, which leads to different spatial experiences. A large common space is created at the entrances.

EUmies Award

A place of convergence, orientation and exposure that functions as a protected agora, an extension of the outdoor plaza inside the building.

A highly technical roof is developed to take advantage of natural light and ventilation.
