EUROPAN

What is EUROPAN?

EUROPAN is a European federation of national organisations that govern architectural competitions and the results of the juries' decisions. The competitions are launched simultaneously by the organising countries around a common theme, timetable and objectives:

EUROPAN, EUROPEAN URBANITY AND STRATEGIC PROGRAMMES

In Spain, EUROPAN is a forum for debate on housing, architecture and urban planning that aims to bring together all those people, institutions and administrations at national, regional or local level who wish to participate in the development of our cities. EUROPAN is based on a regular competition of ideas followed by realisations with a theme, rules and timetable common to all the countries that organise it and whose participants are European architects under 40 years of age who are practising architects in any European country.

Architects, alone or in teams, can submit proposals at any of the proposed sites across the continent.

The primary aim of the competition is to increase the exchange of ideas between European professionals and to bring out innovative ideas as well as the highest quality of architecture and urban planning for our cities.

Throughout each edition of EUROPAN, debates on European cities and young architects' proposals are organised with the participation of national organisations, prize-winning teams, juries, landowners, experts and researchers.

Each member country has a national organisation whose representatives at the European level constitute the General Assembly that coordinates, regulates and disseminates the results of each call.

The Spanish National Committee of EUROPAN is chaired by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda. This National Committee has an Executive Secretariat which is responsible for the organisation of the competition and coordination with the other participating countries. The Higher Council of Architects' Associations of Spain has its headquarters in Madrid.

An international jury in each country evaluates the works submitted to the competition and issues a decision awarding prizes that have the same value in Euros from which the consequent realisations will be derived, either of a part or of the whole of the winning proposal, or of a phase of the development of that proposal, adapted to the specific conditions of the land and the programme proposed by the owner of the land in competition.

The prizes are endowed from the national budget and it is the responsibility of the owner or manager of the land in competition to commission the work derived from the winning proposals to the winning architects or teams. The prizes are awarded by the juries on the basis of the quality of the proposals and not necessarily according to a distribution by location, and it may be the case that no prize is awarded in a given competition location, due to the lower quality of the proposals submitted in that location.

If there is more than one award in the same category at the same site, the promoter is free to choose the team that will carry out the proposal.

In any case, the hierarchy of prizes established by the jury's decision will always be respected.
