EUROPAN 4

Building the city on the city, transformation of contemporary urban areas.

Europan 4 has chosen the peripheries of cities as a field of research. In effect, we are witnessing the end of the dependence of the peripheral areas on the city centre and their emancipation to form a city-puzzle. The aim is to reflect on the multiple developments of these new urban territories where infrastructure networks, micro-centralities, hybrid spaces, autonomous fragments and vacant spaces are mixed. EUROPAN 4 invites young European architects to design projects that fit in with contemporary spaces in the city, places that have their own identity but are in the midst of social change. All are strategic interstices capable of accommodating new urban dynamics.

-rehabilitation-restructuring of the existing but also articulation of new extensions.

-densification of certain spaces but also the valuation of nature as a new public space.

-creation of commercial and cultural micro-centralities, but also resolution of the urban habitat.

Against this metropolitan backdrop, the diversity of which is expressed in the 60 sites proposed for competition in the various participating European countries, EUROPAN 4 calls on young European architects to consider developments in architectural creation.

-How can architects be more attentive to urban uses and help to better integrate post-programmes into the new sociabilities that are beginning to appear in the city?

-How, from the analysis of the context, can we take into account the evolution of contemporary spaces and landscapes, even if they have no heritage value?

-How to build the new from and on the traces of the old? -How to articulate the project-object with the design process, integrating mobility, technology and the programmatic instability of the modern city?

The theme of EUROPAN 4 can be summarised in one overarching question: How to build the contemporary spaces of European cities on the traces of the dispersed modern city inherited from the 20th century? EUROPAN 4 offers young architects 4 themes to work on

Situate

Since the end of the 19th century of industrialization, the traditional city has exploded, scattering multiple fragments around its periphery. To situate oneself is above all to face the contemporary city without prejudice in order to better understand its recent evolutions.

To transform

To transform is, finally, to implement changes of use and to innovate by preparing the city for the needs of the future, taking into account the differential rhythms between the built and the public space and including the project in a policy of social enrichment.

Inheriting

Inheriting means defining an attitude towards the existing, based on the geographical data of a place (its lines of force, the functioning of the soil, the landscape elements) but also evaluating what has been built, taking into account the minor architecture and its capacity to evolve.

Connecting

Connecting is to create the conditions, through the project, for a process of transformation of the existing, to transform the value of heritage into a project tool by finding an urban logic of conservation, construction, demolition. It is to situate urban growth and new projects in the traces of the past, based on the existing urban structure, and it is also to incorporate the time factor.
