Campa de los Ingleses is the real empty heart of the city. Its position on the map is clear in this respect. The old centre located in the old city has been moving towards the Ensanche, and towards Deusto, but the construction of the old Euskalduna Shipyards and the RENFE warehouses have prevented it from becoming what it is today, by jumping towards the estuary, in contact with the water.

The construction of the new Guggenheim Museum and the Opera and Conference Centre on the vacant land is the opportunity sought. The two pieces will enter into dialogue with the University of Deusto and the Museum of Fine Arts. There are four pieces at the ends of the Doña Casilda de Iturriza park which, by entering into dialogue, will strongly tension the place, configuring a new cultural park.

In this territory, the Palacio de Opera y Congresos will appear as the gigantic remains of a ship, a ghost ship, which must have been built a long time ago in the old Euskalduna shipyards and which, abandoned, was buried in the muddy bottom of the Ría. Its shape and construction are reminiscent of the shape of a ship. Its plates and rivets are rusted. We are only going to clean the interior and arrange in it, as in the holds of a ship, various rooms and the large spaces necessary for its use as an Opera. We are going to transform this rusty box, which we have supported, as it should be, in a dry dock, into a music box. With a double inner skin that insulates and provides the most suitable acoustic shape for each of the three rooms.

EUMies Award

In each empty cellar we will support or suspend slabs, platforms, nets, either made of wood or wire mesh; some will serve as stands; others will be acoustic ceilings. But support will always be of the same type.
