House in Perbes

Carlos Quintáns Eiras

The house is located in the Betanzos estuary, in the north of Galicia, in a haven from the rigour of the Atlantic. The project must be accommodated with the topography and access. The orientation is very good for capturing the sun and the views of the estuary, framed by the pine trees that already exist on the cliff.

The project was born as a solution to meet the topography to configure the access by car, the volumetric separations derived from the local regulations and the meeting with the garden and swimming pool areas. It is the containment that really defines the plot and the house. A common solution in Galicia is used: retaining the earth with granite walls made of large, irregularly shaped stones, worked on only one side and complemented with rubble.

The house seeks the sincere expression of the materials, both inside and outside, where it stands out little from the terrain. The upper facade of aluminium, receives the access for the car, machines and a studio that is protected, towards the sea all glazed and the small presence of the sides with large stones that accompany the containment.

The house in this game of adapting to the terrain is split in two, moving a metre and a half between parts that are joined by a four-section staircase that combines the floors. The two bodies are covered with an inclined zinc plane which, by adapting to this drop, becomes parallel to the ground and which illuminates and ventilates from its central area.
