Jorba Castle

The second phase will begin in 2019 with the aim of completing a tour of the different historical stages of the castle, recovering the terrace on the upper level as an observation point of the territory and initiating the tasks of prospecting the first walled enclosure.

The excavation process uncovered the structure of a small chapel of 60 m2 from the 12th century consisting of three 4-metre-high walls with a series of decorative elements dating from the 16th century. On them are very well preserved 17th-century sgraffito and chamfering. The different layers of sediment on these walls reflect the multiple uses that the chapel acquired over the years, and it was decided to preserve this heritage in order to improve the understanding of the history of the castle.

The project responds to this discovery and proposes the covering of this space to prevent the entry of water and allow for future archaeological work. The roof is materialised with a light structure of laminated wood that recognises the historic layout and an enclosure of polycarbonate sheets to enhance natural lighting. The difficult accessibility and the irregular geometry of the walls make it impossible to work with prefabricated elements and lead to the choice of a lightweight construction system made on site.

The new structure adapts to the pre-existence and is supported by threaded rods, taking advantage of the original foundations, thus allowing for its reversibility.

Project plan - Carles Enrich Studio

Taking advantage of this discovery, the project was rethought by proposing a landscape route that covers the first two historical stages of the castle and ends inside the chapel. The route begins with the access to the enclosure, recovering the passage through the original gate. The upper terrace was recovered by lowering the ground to the level of the original paving, converting the space into a viewpoint and observation point of the remains of the royal road that connected Barcelona with Lleida.

The boundary is defined by a change in section, reconstructing the retaining wall 90 cm below the level of the original pavement and recognising the extension of its horizontal plane with a rod as a railing. Three flights of stairs made of 90 cm wide wooden slats on a stockpile of leftover stones link this level with the chapel entrance, 4 m below, thus completing the landscaped route.

The site as material

All material obtained from the archaeological excavation is reused. The stones are used to form a cyclopean concrete wall to contain the earth on the upper terrace and ensure the stability of the whole. Stones of different sizes, lime mortar and sand in varying proportions are used to define textures that differ from the original wall, making it easier to read by contrast. The earth obtained from the excavation is used again to create an access platform, as well as the new paving for the chapel. The surplus stones are collected on the upper level and some of them are reinterpreted as benches at the entrance to the chapel. To make it easier to follow the route, and as a measure to limit the area that can be visited, a rope is added that connects all the spaces and is anchored to the ground with corrugated rods.
