The Magma Arte y Congresos building coexists in a difficult environment due to its proximity to the motorway network in the south of Tenerife. The only references to the surrounding area are the semi-desert landscape of chalky rock in the south of Tenerife and the sea, whose imposing presence frames the building with the constant view of the island of La Gomera. The response to this situation stems from an appreciation of the landscape, prolonging it with its emerging geometric rocks in the building housing the different services of the programme. These "rocky" faults are arranged in such a way as to favour the flow of the roof, imagined as a liquid in movement that encloses the space in all directions. The liquid unfolds and multiplies, producing cracks of light and ventilation that intensify the sensation of lightness of the undulating surface.
Massive elements contain offices, toilets and wash rooms; the space between them can be used for different activities depending on the degree of compartmentalisation.
The Centre, with a surface area of 26,000 m2, operates with three different entrances, simultaneously or independently, favouring flexibility of use in terms of space and time. The main entrance, which leads to the large foyer, leads to the cafeteria or to the auditorium steps. Another access is located on an upper level where the offices are located. In the case of concerts with large audiences, access will be via a third way, on a ramp from the street.
The versatility of the building allows the space to be adapted for larger or smaller meetings; the central area can be converted from an auditorium with a capacity of up to 3,000 people to small rooms of 300, the size usually required for common congresses.
The distribution is carried out through the arrangement of panels with built-in acoustic insulation that will be housed in the cabinet-rocks. The construction system consists of a regular metal structure with 90% equal flat beams and a telescopic substructure with an average height of 45 cm.
The choice of materials is determined by the intention of the maximum adaptation of the building to its surroundings; concrete with chasnera stone aggregate is used in all the volumes. The roof is covered with panels of vegetable fibre and cement, which are given a treatment that tints their finish and colour with the local stone. The entrances of natural light are resolved through longitudinal cracks produced by the meeting of the different elements.
In its design and execution, new directions were taken, so that an auditorium of great sound quality was set up, inserted in a space between movable partitions that provide the space with flexibility and allow the alternation of different public activities of greater or lesser dimensions. Thus the building's design considers not only the quality of the spaces but also their performance.
