New urban waste recycling plant

Ábalos & Herreros (2)

The Valdemingómez area is located in the southeast corner of the municipality of Madrid, where it offers its most depressed area, an arid and degraded territory, historically dedicated to the dumping of the city's waste. The project is part of a series of actions aimed at obtaining a rational waste treatment and recycling system, as well as the transformation and incorporation of its land into the future Southeast Regional Park, one of the city's most attractive bets for balancing the social and environmental north-south differences.

The recycling building centralises a heterogeneous set of waste sorting and processing processes, storage, workshops and offices, unified under a large sloping green roof that echoes both the gravitational character of the process and the original hillside on which it sits, "restored" by taking advantage of the compost produced. The building is wrapped in recycled polycarbonate, unifying the different programmes and incorporating a museum area with a visitors' route aimed at raising environmental awareness among citizens.

This green building, the polycarbonate, the lightly bolted structure and the interior finishes as a whole echo this spirit, composing a construction system that shows the greatest environmental commitment that can be obtained today with the techniques available on the market. The installation has a service life of 25 years. After this period, it can be recycled as park equipment or dismantled by recycling its components.
