Pedestrianisation of Teresa Gil Street

estudio Primitivo González | e. G. arquitectos (1)

The project, dating from the 1990s, undertakes the pedestrianisation of a street in the centre of Valladolid which was once of some importance, but which, due to the decline of its commerce and traffic congestion, had begun a certain process of marginalisation. The proposal was made in a very conservative context, where pedestrianisation was questioned by citizens and shopkeepers, in addition to the city's poor tradition of urban design.

The intervention proposes a voluntarily uniform and simple treatment of the street, with the use of Clinker paving stones in reddish colour. Colour gives the street its own character and at the same time sets it apart from other areas of the city. In addition, a tree-lined square with acacias and lime trees has been configured as a recreational area that personalises the project and helps to revitalise the urban landscape. A triangular kiosk stands out in this space, with a design integrated into the intervention and designed specifically for the square, without making use of the municipal design repeated throughout the city.

Several expressive marble planes link the sheltered sales area with the rest of the square, making it an indispensable part of the whole.

The idea of creating a space for the creation of recreational areas is extended to a wider area, overflowing the limits of the commission and recovering small spaces in the form of a square, in areas that were previously blurred.

Materials of a certain quality are used, such as basalt for the kerbs and granite for the square, and street furniture is designed in stainless steel, marble and phenolic board. The street's former lighting is also being restored, with street lamps suspended from a catenary. The intervention, at the time, achieved a radical change in the level of use of this urban space. In the long term, although since its inauguration it has undergone some specific modifications by the municipal services -including the change of the lighting model or the removal of the ornamental fountain-, the intervention has preserved its essence, and has managed to make the street unique within the city, serving as a reference for its location, and making the street recognisable to all citizens.
