II BEAU

II BEAU

The idea behind this Biennial, to bring the most hidden architecture to light, stems from a reaction.

Although now, in 1993, it seems like centuries have passed since the grandiloquence of the Discovery or the Encounter, the truth is that it was something that only yesterday seemed to dominate everything. And today, with the phenomenon of 1992 as such a distant phenomenon, we believe that our approach to the Biennial is still valid, if not as a reaction, then as an affirmation. Better. So, if at the time we wondered in the face of such a great event: "Are only great works being done? And the other architecture?", and we wanted to shout in defence of the latter, seeing that the former was exalted in all forums, now, at a time of withdrawal and belt-tightening, we know that we are contributing something positive by delving into this architecture that "anyone can do". If you know, of course.

This idea of unearthing what had apparently been buried under the tons of concrete of the "works of '92" was initially proposed more radically, and then gradually had to be nuanced, because it clearly clashed with the obligations imposed by the fact that it was a Biennial, sponsored moreover by official entities. It was also necessary to achieve a certain objectivity in reflecting the two-year panorama of architectural production. So progress was made, as in so many things, by going round in circles. But the focus was never lost: we were going to try to show small architecture, we wanted to bet on the contradiction of shouting for silence and against stridency.
