In 1997, a competition was launched to restore the Santa Caterina urban market, in the old quarter of Barcelona. EMBT won the contract with a proposal to integrate the extreme complexity of the surroundings by creating a commercial market complemented by a residential area and public spaces that would combine all the activities of the neighbourhood.

The project maintains parts of the existing structure and the architects proposed a new and creative interpretation of the area that preserves the history and context of the site.

The proposal superimposes new architecture over old, blends them and gives rise to a conglomerate, a hybrid that emphasises utility and is contemporary. The interior layout of the market is reorganised; there are fewer stalls but entrances and service systems are rationalised; public spaces are extended and it is connected to Avinguda Francesc Cambó, an important transition route in the neighbourhood, which is also surrounded by a dense network of narrow streets.
