Restoration of the Church of San Lorenzo de Valdemaqueda

Only the apse remained of the old church of Valdemaqueda, a late Gothic construction saved from the destruction that occurred for no apparent reason in the 1940s. The nave was then replaced by a rough brick construction of rendered brick, which deteriorated over the years.

The project replaces the latter with a new one, but so as to integrate the old apse; all this with an essential language, "without style", "out of time". The construction and textures, through the light, make up the expressive elements of the new building, whose atmosphere evokes that of so many pre-Romanesque or Cistercian churches, full of constructive and figurative references. Inside, the difference in height between the nave and the apse is notable. The lower one, fragmented by the entrances of overhead light and by the supporting structure of the roof itself, is an antechamber to the somewhat dark apse, in which the Renaissance altarpiece shines.

Despite the simplicity and small size, it is possible to speak of a "route" that begins at the entrance door, set at right angles to the apse. Firstly, the baptismal font stands next to the support of the skylight that illuminates the back wall. Beam and support are shown through a strong backlight, which not only accentuates their presence but also dematerialises them. On the left, a small holy water font provides the nave's only point of visual contact with the exterior through a tiny window. The slight but noticeable slope of the floor indicates the route to the altar, whose presence in the gloom and distance is accentuated by the light penetrating through the clear window.
