The design selected by Aena in October 1997 is characterised by four basic principles which are described below:

Integration into the landscape

Airport terminal buildings are usually surrounded by secondary elements (car park, power plant, etc.) which do not contribute to a clear passenger orientation. In this design proposal, these structures are integrated taking into account the topography of the site, giving the New Terminal Area (NAT) an image that enhances the landscape, expressing its local and homogeneous character. The canyons - large linear courtyards of light - establish a sequence in which the landscape is linearly integrated into the interior space.

Natural light

Estudio Lamela

Each functional module is separated transversally by a canyon (empty space covered with skylights) and serves as a preparatory passage between the phases of the passenger process, facilitating their orientation. In addition, the canyon allows natural light to flow inside, significantly reducing dependence on artificial light and greatly improving the quality of the space.

Spatial clarity

Passenger movement runs through all activities from the moment passengers are received at the dock, through check-in and security control to boarding. The reverse route (arrivals) is also clearly differentiated; disembarkation, baggage reclaim, docks. Arriving and departing passenger flows are at different levels. The shape of the buildings facilitates the process of activities by dividing them into a sequence of functional blocks.

Flexibility

Basic principles - Estudio Lamela

An adaptable configuration is proposed for the entire project, maintaining a strong architectural identity during all phases of the project's evolution and in the face of possible future extensions to the buildings.
