Gironella is a municipality that has grown over the last few decades, divided by the Llobregat river. The historic centre is located on the top of a 20 m high cliff, which includes the remains of the medieval castle and its BCIN listed city wall. This unevenness has been generated by a social fracture due to the fact that the historic centre has been depopulated because of its great accessibility difficulties.

The commission consists of the insertion of a new access to the old town from the riverbed to enhance urban connectivity between the two parts. The new access is integrated into the historical memory of the place, like another layer of the landscape. It is proposed to locate the lift at a strategic point on the Cal Metre road, where the textile colonies were formerly accessed. This location boosts the future recovery of the Cal Metre path to become a busy spot.

Materials are used that dialogue with the pre-existence of the site, enhancing the relationship of the textile industries and recognising the plant platform as a public space. The lift shaft is made of three materials. The steel in the structure, built in a local workshop; the ceramics in the upper sections, laid as a latticework of ridge bricks which gives porosity to the project, and the glass enclosure in the lower section which allows a visual relationship with the public space of the river.
