Naturally, such a vast physical space, covering more than 20 million square kilometres, is dominated by the diversity of its geography, climate and economic resources.
These facts, combined with those derived from the particular cultural vicissitudes of each of the different societies that populate it, determine singular conditions of very different significance when it comes to responding to the enormous number of problems that arise from the tensions between their heterogeneous rhythms of incorporation into the desired progress. [...]
Many architects and urban planners in this formidable field have been committed to ambitious and innovative solutions that lead us to see reality in a different way. Solutions that sometimes seem far from possible and that only through a permanent search reach excellence.
This excellence, forged in the most diverse buildings, from a chapel to a stable or from a humble craft industry to a sober and necessary museum of imposing royal collections, is achieved by the 26 works that today make up the panorama of works included in this tenth edition of the Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism. Alongside them, in order to understand the precise dimension of their quality, it is necessary to recognise the role of universities and schools of architecture through training and research. And that in the X BIAU is expressed in the doctoral theses awarded and mentioned, directed by competent teachers and developed by tenacious scholars aware of the need to increase the intelligence of architecture, incorporating fields and interests that until recently were foreign to it. The necessary dissemination of architecture, both of built works and of thought and research, adapts to the technological challenge by simultaneously using the traditional media, books and magazines, with the formats and media that today are essential if the immediate dissemination that society demands today is to be achieved.
As in every edition of the BIAU, it is no easy task to condense in a single figure the reference of a trajectory capable of illustrating the continuous effort over time when unanimity is sought. On this occasion, the different juries found it in Eduardo Souto de Moura's personal way of practising his profession.
