The rivers Porma and Esla flow through the plain of Mansilla Mayor to meet on their descent towards the Duero, bathing these lands on their way. For generations, the hand of man has moulded this landscape into the rich mosaic it is today. The farmland, its morphology and its divisions tell us about the history of this place; they are the living tattoo that characterises this landscape.

The proposal seeks to transfer this tessellated language of the countryside to the heart of the town, in order to imprint the character of the landscape on the layout of its squares and streets. This fragmented mantle, stitched together by the lines that divide fields and channel water, serves to generate a unique urban continuum, which gives unity and identity to the two central poles of Mansilla Mayor: the fountain square and the church square.

The elements necessary to configure these spaces are strategically placed on this structure: on the one hand, the new artesian fountain, designed as a central and identifying element of the municipality; on the other, the large trees native to the area, which provide pleasant shade and a natural barrier against the wind, and which also shape the urban space by enveloping it. Alongside them, the central banks function as meeting and gathering places and domesticate the scale of this new urban space.

The new square in Mansilla Mayor is planned as an austere intervention in keeping with the site. New spaces of encounter and collective identity are proposed, trying to be sensitive to the reality of an emptied Spain.
