Nursery School 0-3 years in Arganda del Rey

This project invited us to reflect on the first months of a baby's life. The intuition that is applied in the way of living in primitive castros, huts, igloos or Indian tents, solves with the minimum possible material the maximum volume, and it is usually developed in circles. The house is the mother, and the comfort of "maternal" seclusion is an enclosure with a single opening to the outside that gives "the light".

We tried to transfer all this to the project, even more so when we observed that children always tend to play in a circle (the circle, the chair, knucklebones...); they all feel the same at that age. The linear arrangement between people is often imposed by a discipline, the natural thing is the "compact herd". When playing alone, they tend to surround their immediate environment with toys that they can get their hands on. This circular situation coupled with the need to control what happens outside your "cave" led to the opening of a single large hole to the outside in each cell. The circular shape allows it to be watched from any point on the perimeter.

After concluding that the primitive circular shape is the right one for this project, thought was given to how it could be combined and related to adapt to the different situations of the programme. What in primitive settlements was the urban space, we consider here as the space of circulations and interrelations. The central covered space functions in the same way, allowing the various openings between circles to illuminate the area sequentially. This central spine, without a defined shape, is the one that groups together the different classrooms and services that make the centre function, it is the link between pieces that, in addition, will characterise the final image. The dynamic central space is contrasted with the static space of the circular cells; we reinforce this feeling with different materials and textures, so that the children, whether they go out into the courtyard or into the central passage, understand that this is an "unprotected" place.
