The Can Calau farmhouse, a ruined listed building in the Natural Park of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone was rebuilt and extended.
The main building has been reconstructed with stone masonry walls from the ruins and impregnated with the patina of time. The extensions consist of the semi-buried garage, which doubles as a stone terrace , and the semi-detached volume of the living room and master bedroom. This volume is made of exposed concrete and oak and replicates the vernacular models of the outbuildings, in wood with formal volumetric simplicity. The interiors with stone, wooden roof, exposed concrete walls and slabs, are combined in spaces that have a discursive and formal unity, avoiding overly obvious solutions between the new and the old. A double-height space, which houses the kitchen connects the two floors, achieving interiors with contrasting lights, evoking past atmospheres, with distant views. With the reconstruction of the old stone bench, a pool-like water feature was designed to bathe in in summer and the building complex was redefined: the main building, the hut and the threshing floor with the water pool.
