Recovery of El Caminito del Rey

(1)

The area falls within three municipalities in the centre of the province of Malaga: Ardales, Antequera and Alora. The Caminito del Rey is a narrow footbridge that was built at the beginning of the 20th century as a service road for workers who had to travel from the Conde de Guadalhorce's dam to the Chorro hydroelectric plant.

The path is 7.7 km long and is divided into 4.8 km of dirt tracks and access roads and 1.9 km of footbridges anchored in the vertical walls of the gorges, the most famous part of the trail and its main claim to fame. Some sections of these footbridges are more than 100 metres above the level of the Guadalhorce River.

Having lost its industrial importance at the end of the 20th century, it fell into ruin due to the effects of nature, the passing of time and vandalism. The restoration of the path is not only relevant as a tourist attraction, but also draws attention to the history and heritage of the Gaitanes.

The project has achieved its aim by means of a construction system that mimics the escarpment and adapts to the vertical topography as if it were a living being that adheres to the rock, and is therefore organic.
