Rehabilitation of housing in El Pópulo

The work was carried out on an old palace house occupied by eleven families wanting to live within the old walls of the popular Populo neighbourhood in Cadiz. The aim of the project is to provide the tenants with decent living conditions in their own property, to dignify their lives without losing their memory; to incorporate contemporary technical advances and provide the necessary ventilation and lighting to create habitable spaces where there were none, with a nod to our times without resorting to standardisation and rationalisation of spaces, but rather, to learn from the casual and arbitrary to enrich the particularities of each.

The formal complexity and the starting conditions of this project, in which the interest in conserving the historic values of the house is manifest, lead us to an action that interweaves four types of work: the refurbishment and consolidation of 18th-century and older walls (ground and first floors);  regulatory restructuring without altering the courtyards; replacement of the building (second floor), and the increasing the height (recessed attic).

This entails work to consolidate the ground and first floors, where the new architecture emerges to complete the programme and merge with the morphology of the house. The need to maintain the same useful area, and to maintain the height of the current building on the façade, led us to develop a project with space for five decent dwellings and premises on the ground floor for the neighbourhood residents' association.

One of the main objectives is to recover the character of the street that once possessed the part  of the plot juts out to connect to a former small square next to the New Cathedral. It will be a private street, two storeys high, partially covered, ventilated and lit through two courtyards and an opening to the façade.
