Mies van der Rohe Award 2009

"The Jury of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award has decided to award the 2009 Award to the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo, by SNØHETTA. The jury met twice. At their first meeting, held in Barcelona from 6 to 8 February 2009, they reviewed the 340 nominated works. After extensive discussion, a preliminary shortlist of 38 works was selected for inclusion in the catalogue and exhibition, from which the five finalists were chosen. After visiting the five finalists between 23 and 25 April, the jury met again on 26 April at the Triennale di Milano. The members extended the list of works to be featured in the publication and exhibition to a total number of 50 in response to the large number of works nominated and as an affirmation of the high quality of architecture being developed across Europe. This wide selection, which differs greatly in terms of scale, programme and context, reflects the strength of European architectural culture and its connection to urban values. Afterwards, the members of the Jury entered into an exchange of views on the finalists and their respective qualities. The Jury members concluded with satisfaction that, while each of the projects presented a particular strategy in response to the specific conditions of their site and programme, all five finalists addressed contemporary situations and problems and, from a conceptual point of view, confronted and solved the real challenges facing our cities today."
