The B. Cartagena Auditorium and Congress Centre

The "B" is this long construction, a body, which lives from the inheritance, from the continuity of treatment of a site: The port of Cartagena, which is nothing more than the port of Cartagena, the limit of a city to the sea.

Everything there is proper to it, proper to the port, to every port we mean: the immaculate straightness of the line of the cliff (straight), the invariably calm sea (flat), the artificially horizontal plane of the quay (flat), the sky as a variable background for this plane (plane on plane?), all based on an artifice to represent the most simple and by simple the most natural, the most enormously artificial plane which equates to the most natural.

The Alfonso XII quay is 1,000 metres long, just one kilometre, and we are supposed to be at the end of it. Along the entire length of the beach there is a 20-metre strip, parallel to the line of the cliff, which is respected by the buildings. Along this strip you can take the most pleasant walk in the city, a daily procession, following the unchanging line of the cliff. And this promenade is what we favour, it is what we introduce into the interior of the building, in a dimensional continuity that seems to excavate an artificial beach, but which is really a continuity of history, because the old beach of El Batel was located exactly there, in the same place. The artificial is the harbour, not the beach.
