Inflexion Turning Point

The architect has always sought to find strategies that would allow him to navigate between the often contradictory forces that intervene in construction and in urban and landscape planning: an attitude that, over the last few decades, has made it possible for Spanish architecture - despite the excesses and mistakes it has also made - to participate to a large extent in the transformation of the country.

The success of the most outstanding works was internationally recognised, thanks to the attitude of the most demanding professionals who maintained a balance between conception and project, the scale of the interventions and respect for the context and the landscape, between the will to build an idea and the difficulties they inevitably faced. This has undoubtedly been the most valued characteristic of a way of doing things, in which form, space and construction were the principle on which the best achievements were based.

However, the sudden onset of an already long and severe economic crisis has radically transformed the optimistic outlook for architecture in recent years. What began as an adjustment of the previous cycle has manifested itself as a drastic change that is substantially modifying the connections established between the architect and architectural production, to the point that many believe that we are immersed in a process of transformation that not only affects the architect's future capacity for action, but even the model -educational, professional and employment- that will have to follow, once the current situation is overcome.

Observing the growing pessimism of those who doubt the possibility of maintaining the high level of quality of Spanish architecture, our desire, as directors of the 12th BEAU, has been to encourage a reflection on the recent past with a positive attitude, recognising this moment as a turning point, not a regression, from which to draw valid conclusions on the basis of which to face the near future with the necessary optimism.
