School of Architecture in the former Military Hospital in Granada

The new School of Architecture, which was formerly the Military Hospital, is located in the Realejo district, at the foot of the Alhambra, facing the Campo del Príncipe. A lengthy process of transformation over more than five hundred years, which began with the existence of a Nasrid house and continued in the 16th century with the construction of the "Casa del Almirante" (Admiral's House), was completed until the mid-20th century, as a monumental building, a large block that surpasses the small scale of the surrounding area.

The complex had the right structure to accommodate the new school, although it required a clarifying intervention to achieve unity, not in a stylistic sense, but in an integrating sense. In this complex, along with elements that have their own architectural values, there are others that lacked them. Our action has been aimed precisely at ensuring that the tension between the authenticity of the past and the newness of the present permeates the rest, so that it finally finds an architectural destiny. In this new stage, construction would be the catalytic agent of a new "whole", recognising in the materiality of each epoch and light the integrating foundation of the historical process.

Entrance halls, courtyards, galleries, corridors and staircases are spaces that communicate the different parts of the building, but also the different times of its existence, and the different activities. All this, together with the material, constructive and spatial diversity of its parts, will be decisive in identifying in a recognisable way the character of this new School of Architecture located in the heart of Granada. May the building's accumulated and renewed energy radiate over time to be a source of well-being and inspiration for new architects.
