IX BIAU

New Geographies

The geography of Ibero-America is undergoing a formidable, complex and contradictory transformation with global consequences, in which backwardness and modernity coexist at the same time.

The sustained economic growth and political stability of most of the countries that make up the Ibero-American community, the increase in cultural relations between them, and the shift of a significant part of world trade from the Atlantic to the Pacific are changing the geography of the continent. [...] At the other end of the scale, site-specific geographies, social and cultural context, climate, available technology are becoming increasingly critical for architecture, territory and cities.

The 9th Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism would like to situate itself in these two extremes, which seem distant but which are the two sides of the same coin, both of which are the consequence of globalisation. This Biennial would like to reflect on the relevance of the role of the architect and the urban designer in these new territories of continental scales and, at the same time, to investigate how the architect today can understand the specifics of each place as an instrument to produce the best architecture.

The 9th BIAU aims to find and showcase the best architectural and urban design projects that incorporate the contexts, social, technological and climatic demands on the scale of architecture, but also to point out those initiatives and territorial and urban strategies that help to build new geographies that incorporate the demands of infrastructures, resolve economic tensions, value the unique ecologies of Ibero-America and are capable of adding urban, territorial and cultural values and can be a vehicle for greater social cohesion.
