Of course, this is a very particular territory. Everything is big and small, there are rich and poor, everything is plentiful and scarce. Ibero-America is inhabited and constructed at the same time. It is constantly being repaired. Spaces are built by the people who inhabit them, so they think about what they build and build with what they have. Ibero-America is always experienced as a city in the making, pulsating, mestizo, imperfect.
The 11th Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism shows us how we live in Ibero-America. It shows us naturally, talking about everyday life. Therein lies its radicalism. Our approach to this fact could not have been other than being but not being, letting reality show itself. Descending into the mud to later move away.
In its 11th edition, the BIAU emerges on the banks of the Paraguay River, marked by its floods, by the climate, by its inhabitants, by the reality of the city of Asunción. The mother of cities. Wild and dangerous as a birth, sweet and beautiful as a mother. In Paraguay, the Biennial is made from within, it is made by them, their people and their agents. There is no better way to learn than by observing, by letting do. If we do this, it is primarily to learn. In this case we learn from Paraguay. Let it be done and, of course, stop doing so much. Perhaps this would be the theoretical foundation that surrounds this biennial. If you have to have one.
Like a community of communities, of which the whole of Ibero-America forms part, the 11th Biennial transcends the historic centre of the city, its borders, to approach Paraguay, the Chacarita neighbourhood, the Jesuit reductions, the Chaco; it enters other countries, other cities, and echoes their sounds, their projects, their thoughts, the pulse of all of them, through images, videos, very personal gazes projected onto the façades of Asunción. Like a loop, it all begins and ends in Asunción and, along the way, visits the vast territory that makes up Ibero-America.
